Narrator, Lanxi Zhen Chapter 1
Lanxi Zhen tells the story of Qingning, Laojun, and Xuanli during the war, 400 years before the present time.
The story starts with Laojun saving Qingning's village from army defectors who were threatening them. Qingning witnesses Laojun healing the villagers and becomes determined to study medicine under him. Laojun invites the village to Lanxi Town. When they arrive, Xuanli shows them around and gets Lao Wang to settle them in while he takes Qingning to Sanhe Hall and tells her that she needs to become the best doctor in the town for Laojun to take her in as his disciple. Qingning achieves this feat in 21 months and officially beccomes Laojun's disciple when she was 12.[1]
Qingning starts to learn how to cultivate and goes around the outside world with Laojun and Xuanli to learn more about society and the world of humans and elfins. In Luocheng, they witness a young man who leads a siege in the war. Laojun starts observing him out of interest, which leads Laojun to be able to rescue him when he gets badly beaten up. Laojun takes the man to Beihe, saying he might be who Beihe is looking for. The man later reveals his name to be Wuxian.[2]
Three years later, the war eventually ends and the warring kingdoms become no more. A lot of residents who took refuge in Lanxi Town because of the war decide to leave and see the outside world now that it's peaceful again. Laojun, Qingning, and Xuanli attend the inauguration of the new empire, but Laojun detects the presence of elfins and interferes with an assassination attempt on Emperor Huang. He takes the assassin Panjing under his custody and invites Wuxian, the emperor's bodyguard and namesake of the new reign title, for a talk. Wuxian asks Laojun to stop observing him and Laojun refuses to take Wuxian as a disciple, saying that Wuxian will understand the meaning of this day when he becomes immortal himself.[3] Xuanli borrows Laojun's Blue Jade Plate so he and Wuxian can spar in Doushuai.
Meanwhile, unrest comes to the residents as they realize that Lanxi Town is completely cut off from the outside world and there's no guarantee that anyone who's ever left actually made it out alive. A group led by Lao Jiang confronts Laojun about it, but they are outed by Laojun as spies for Yanming. Laojun goes to the gate to Yanming's spiritual realm to ask for an explanation but is stopped by Diting. Laojun summons Xuanli to fight with Diting to be allowed to see Yanming, but Yanming comes out anyway and they have a talk as the two fight. Laojun informs her that there is someone breaking the rules in her realm that she should probably look into. Yanming sends Fenghua to find out who it is, then expresses interest in Qingning.[4]
Qingning confesses her feelings to Laojun, but Laojun tells her that she was far from being the first person to confess to her and that he has never been capable of romantic feelings. Even though he can't understand Qingning's feelings, however, he was willing to do anything to make her happy.[5] Realizing this is the only answer she'll get, Qingning asks permission to travel alone to make peace with herself. Laojun makes her take every artifact that can protect her, and she goes around jumping from location to location to heal others, much to Yanming's frustration at barely being able to track her down. Qingning steadily builds up a reputation for herself. One day she meets the imperial commissioner Wuxian and gives him a list of corrupt officials for looking into. While they're catching up, Qidao arrives and challenges Qingning at the threat of killing everyone at the street they were at. Qingning and Wuxian invite him to lunch first before they fight, and it becomes quickly obvious that Qingning is too well protected.[6] Qingning and Wuxian part ways afterwards.
Qingning meets Naga, who easily breaks through all her defences and almost kills her if not for Laojun intervening at the very last minute. Yanming likewise shows up to put Naga in place for causing trouble in her realm, forcing Naga to flee due to being outnumbered.[7] Laojun takes Qingning back to Lanxi Town and reveals the truth that healing types like herself were not only extremely rare but also extremely sought after due to their potential ability to resurrect. In order for Qingning to be in full control of her powers, she needs to become an immortal whose lifespan will not be consumed so easily by her abilities. Laojun, Qingning, and Xuanli go into seclusion in Doushuai to begin Qingning's cultivation into immortality.[8]
In the outside world, cases of elfins eating humans start to pile up the past two years and cause trouble for the empire. Emperor Huang recalls the traveling Wuxian to the palace by putting out fake wanted posters for him and asks him for help to deal with the elfin problem. Wuxian goes to Lanxi Town to seek help from Laojun. Unable to interfere due to elfin rules, Laojun instead gives Wuxian a list of artifacts he can borrow instead to solve the problem himself. Xuanli and Wuxian have a rematch in Doushuai and are both equal in strength. While Wuxian goes around putting elfins back in order, Laojun recalls all the Elfin Guild's innkeepers for a meeting. Meanwhile, Qingning prepares for her coming-of-age ceremony.[9]
